Elder/Deacon Training

From His Throne of Glory
Officer Training Videos from Catawba Presbytery

Catawba Presbytery has produced From His Throne of Glory which are six videos to aid ARP churches in their officer training process. This need was identified by the presbytery’s Christian Education Committee after conducting a survey in which it was seeking ways to be a more intentional equipping aid for the presbytery. The filming of these was completed at the Old Brick Church in Fairfield County, South Carolina.

These videos vary in length from 10 minutes to just over 20 minutes. The hope is that these videos can fit nicely into regularly scheduled session/diaconate meetings or at times of better use scheduled by each church. The material is rooted in the work of Dr. Mark Ross on officer training and Chapters 5 & 6 of our Form of Government. Not every detail of the FOG is covered as the videos are a pastoral representation on how to engage the FOG as officers.

Ministers and elders from Catawba presbytery were asked to be part of this project simply because it came from our own identified need, but we hope the videos will be used by any church that deems them beneficial. The videos belong to Catawba Presbytery, and they’re offered for free to any church that wants to use them.

There is a discussion guide in the works, and we will let you know when it is ready. That said, we are excited to offer these videos as they stand on their own rather well.

Our hope is that through this series elders will grow in their role as undershepherds of the Good Shepherd, and that deacons will serve well as Jesus came not to be served but to serve.

How to use them:

  • Mixed group of officer training with both elders and deacons present.
  • Over a weekend of training
  • Watch one video at a time at the beginning of either session or diaconate meeting.
  • Watched as homework assignments with a discussion to ensue at some point in the future.
  • Multiple churches can gather together and have breakout sessions.
  • On and on go the possibilities!
